"g'bye, i'm out of here", and headed to the 177th street el station to catch the train to whitehall street induction center.
one thing you know when entering the military is that you can turn off all thinking processes. you will be instructed as to anyrhing and everything you must do. any deviation will be dealt with in accordance with their uniform code - like being married. i could handle this. bed, board, transportation, instructions, and spending money will be provided.
checked in at whitehall street. did they ask my name? did they look at me? when is lunch? where's the rest room? i had no idea. after the preliminary mishmash, whatever, there was a bus ride to fort dix (ugh) new jersey.

wikipedia: "For many years, a military induction center was located at 39 Whitehall Street before being bombed by Sam Melville in 1969 and rendered unusable. Nearly three million Americans were inducted at the Army building which existed at the site from 1884 to the end of the Vietnam War. This center was made famous in Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant."[3"]
