179TH AND VYSE, BRONX, NY (PART LIX): LIFE BEFORE DEATH IN (ugh) NEW JERSEY

(continued)

the first time i entered the grounds of CCNY, i was awed.  i saw young people conversing and wondered what great, deep ideas they conveyed to each other.  this may have been the day the entrance exam was given.

artie and mortie were already college guys and already absorbing all that great stuff.

from the D train station i walked the hill to convent avenue to the college grounds.  being early i went up to amsterdam avenue, got a cup of coffee, put a nickel in the juke box and played some slow jazz song, which mrirrored my mood.  i reported to the test on time and did well enough to be accepted.  my mediocre h. s. grades plus my test score got me through the screening process - yea.

in those days the city colleges were practically free.  no tuition, and for less than $10 miscellaneous fees you could sign up for a full course load but that was in the old-old days.
