179TH AND VYSE, BRONX, NY (PART XXIX): LIFE BEFORE DEATH IN (ugh) NEW JERSEY

(continued)

in the spring of the year (or fall - whatever) there was marble season.  everyone of the kids were playing, gambling and shooting marbles.

i had my first taste of business as the proud owner of a cigar box (at ps 67) with the lid bent over.  all you had to do was roll the your marble up the incline and into the box to win a marble.  if it failed, i kept your marble.  after two days i was the warren buffet of marbles.  unfortunately there is no rule of law or law and order in the kids' marble world.  two other kids decided to take my lucratve business.  i was successful in fighting them off but my box was broken in the fray.  still having a gazillion marbles i decided to retire.

being bored after a day or two of retirement i played a girl on the lot at 181st street and bryant ave. and lost my wealth to her.  women women, women.  i should have learned then and there that the male of the species is doomed.
