179TH AND VYSE, BRONX, NY (PART XXI): LIFE BEFORE DEATH IN (ugh) NEW JERSEY
(continued)
i know you've been asking, "where is this church football field i've commented on"? well this is it. it is a little overgrown since i was going to high school and enclosed by the city but it is still there.
we would round up some ten year old kids as linemen and gun fodder and play touch football.
the back window of our apartment overlooked the field. that building has been replaced as is most of the others on 179th st.
to the right of the level churchyard (bryant ave. side - now gone) separated partially by a stone embankment separator was an empty lot which stretched from 180th st. to almost 179th st. in wintertime it provided a good slope for sledding. cutting school and roasting mickeys at the stone wall was a fun activity.
oh sure, growing up with the bigfoot kids in (ugh) new jersey would be so much better, you say.
(to be continued)
