tonight is a bad night to have a relationship breakup. the winter is just beginning, its cold, icy, snowy, and there are few daylight hours for the next couple of months. and yet more couples split or start splitting on this night (i think).
why do i mention this? because ---- i have no idea.

note to boise state fans:
i'm sure you are all saddened about uconn's loss to stanford, yesterday. kleenex will be distributed to the heart broken.
********************************************************************************************************************
finally, i went to kim jong il's barber shop for a haircut. haven't been there for many a moon as i've patronized other places searching for a good fast haircut. much to my surprise the place is in other hands. there was no one there i had ever seen before, i think. they must have been there for quite awhile as the conversation with other customers seemed friendly and familiar. anyway, in about two weeks my hair will grow back. right now i look like a river-kwai pow.
******************************************************************************************************************
on my rounds yesterday i stopped off at target for some stuff and discovered why we are in recession. surprise! surprise! the cause of the recession is that cheap bastard american businesses do not hire enough people. the checkout lines were long; prices were mismarked; and the price scanners on the floor did not work. i'm sure everything is working properly in baghdad.
all this is encouraged by wall street toadies and congressional and government policies.
*****************************************************************************************************************
am i going to wish you a happy new year? no, you may have whatever kind of year you want. you're on your own.

DR. STEVE, U. S. DEFENSE DEPT. GENIUS
for thirty years dr. steve worked on the development of the door wedge. finally finding out that it was already invented he became an alcoholic and died in an officer's club restroom. in addition, he now was older and no longer attracted the skanks at the bar in a physical way. life was not worth continuing. visions of fame in the scientific community vanished. so sad.
his concept of the wedge developed over many years supported of course by tax payer money. in the beginning he tried bowling balls but found they rolled away from the door. the mathematics of his findings can be found in his technical report, NON-LINEAR FRICTION ANALYSIS.
later on he tried blocks of ice which melted and also slipped away from the door.
almost successful was the use of computer hard drives but the exposed circuitry scratched the floor.
finally coming up with a triangular shaped rubber device he was let down and depressed upon finding he was only 45000 years late. so close. beaten out by a neanderthal man in a cave
his boss said that the U. S. DEFENSE DEPT. is always seeking new and innovative methods and he provides the environment for scientific inquiry and growth. he praised dr. steve for his harvard-like new england accent and for always carrying a manila folder around when not at his desk.

WINTER WEIGHT ANALYSIS
(WITH APOLOGIES TO THE HARD WORKING AND COMPETENT PEOPLE IN THE U. S. DEFENSE DEPT. (WHO ARE SWALLOWED UP BY THE MEAT MACHINE))
using the latest U. S. DEFENSE DEPT. scientific, and mathematical techniques including multi-variable regurgitation, analysis of deviates, divergence of sputum induction, dr. professor meatball's theorem, and an embarassingly large amount of money for contractor salesmen we are investigating the cause of increased winter weight among executives, officers, and the skanks of the defense dept.
so far it appears that eating, drinking, and not getting off their fat asses is the major cause. talking, flirting, and hanging out in officer's clubs and the rest room does not burn body fat.
dr. professor bozo meatball, leader of this program and graduate of (ugh) new jersey colleges and universities has devised a complex statistical method using only your fingers and toes. he considers himself a genius with degrees: ms in oral activities, phd in bar hopping, ahole studies, and draft dodging.

179TH AND VYSE, BRONX, NY (PART XXI): LIFE BEFORE DEATH IN (ugh) NEW JERSEY
(continued)
i know you've been asking, "where is this church football field i've commented on"? well this is it. it is a little overgrown since i was going to high school and enclosed by the city but it is still there.
we would round up some ten year old kids as linemen and gun fodder and play touch football.
the back window of our apartment overlooked the field. that building has been replaced as is most of the others on 179th st.
to the right of the level churchyard (bryant ave. side - now gone) separated partially by a stone embankment separator was an empty lot which stretched from 180th st. to almost 179th st. in wintertime it provided a good slope for sledding. cutting school and roasting mickeys at the stone wall was a fun activity.
oh sure, growing up with the bigfoot kids in (ugh) new jersey would be so much better, you say.

"I didn't get "Will & Grace" (1998) until I was almost 40. Had I listened to everybody else who kept saying, 'Oh, there's too much competition, you'll never get an agent, you'll never get a part, 90 percent of actors are out of work," if I'd listened to that, if everybody listened to that, then nobody would leave the house and the world would come to a crashing halt."

XMAS AND XMAS EVE
OOPS - DIFFERENT DAY. |
tomorrow afternoon will be the big final celebration dinner filled with alcoholic beverages, salty, fatty, and sweet foods. the then fulfilled parents, like salmon at the end of their run, will grab their chests, and fall head first into the dessert.
have a happy parturition, procreation, fertility day.
**********************************************************************************************************
the xmas story seems to revolve around a couple named mary and joseph in bethlehem in territory that has currently been taken over by the palestinians. mary, pregnant from some unknown source is about to give birth but no palestinians step forward to be of any assistance. as usual (if they are there at all) they have their hand out but contribute nothing - maybe just trouble.

HAIRCUT TIME AGAIN - MAYBE
if Kevin Bacon doesn't take a haircut who the hell do i think i am to get one. no one even looks at an old geezer, so what does the length or neatness of my hair matter?
in addition, getting a haircut is worse than having to get gas for the car. it is an imposition on my (ummm ... valuable) time and a bad experience. where should i go? as noted previously, it is a problem: the bookie's place; shanghai lil's; work release guys'; bangkok harriet's; river kwai emporium; hair butchery shop; or chicken ranch boutique.
it takes about two weeks after a haircut before i appear ok when i accidentally see myself in a mirror.
i'll wait awhile.

179TH AND VYSE, BRONX, NY (PART XX): LIFE BEFORE DEATH IN NEW JERSEY
beng the xmas season makes me nostalgic for the times, mr. brandt, principal at public school 6 the bronx would read the passage from the bible which started. "the lord is my shepherd .....". i never understood what the hell he was talking about. a shepherd is "a person who herds, tends, and guards sheep" sorta like a cowboy except not as smart or clean. why would i have a person like this working for me? its a mystery.
so much for the influence of the bible on me.

"GETTING MOTHER'S BODY", AUDIO EDITION, READ AND WRITTEN BY SUZAN-LORI PARKS
SUZAN-LORI PARKS |
there are some soft murky spots so i would not put it in the same class as steinbeck's work but being an expert and pundit i recommend this item.
*******************************************************************************************************************
i had a tough time finding this song. entering just "nearer " on youtube resulted only in reams of crap about god and not the song "you're nearer". that's why i've displayed two versions here (as revenge).
yesterday a poll found that almost half of the population of this country thinks that this planet was created less than 10 thousand years ago. NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE STUPIDITY OF YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS.

(continued)
for the under 20 crowd the major eating place in the neighborhood was witkin's delicatessen on 180th st. between vyse and daly. it was noted for the bestest corned beef, pastrami, tongue sandwiches and other delights in the universe.
along this particular side of the street there was an appetizing store specializing in what you might call condiments, appetizera, pickles and candy; a meat market where you could select a live thing, have it killed, and dressed for your use; a very large fruit and vegetable market; and assorted shops
on the next street between daly and honeywell was a public library which eventually moved to honeywell between 179th and 180th..
two streets up on the corner of crotona parkway was the office of dr. ballot. for $2 you could get the best medical care. for $5 he would come to your house.
THIS IS WHY THE GREAT DEPRESSION WAS CALLED GREAT.

NAZIS TAKE OVER BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS
i have finally had it with the keepers of inflation statistics. they lie.
my bathroom tissue is now the size of a cocktail napkin and they are telling me that the quality of products is improving. i need a larger bathroom tissue.
over the past year two moicrowave ovens have broken down and had to be replaced.
8 oz. canned tuna is now 5 ozs.
give me a break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
some bls bullying nazi autocratic fascist despot bureaucrat who never gets off his fat ass is telling us that
quality and other attributes are now superior to what they were and is subjectively incorporating it into the price indices and you are buying it and your wages and entitlements are dependent upon those numbers.
NO - I DON'T FEEL ANY BETTER NOW THAT I HAVE SPOKEN OUT.
the truth will make you free????????????????????????

TAX LEGISLATION - SHOW ME THE MONEY!
one time i overheard a probate court judge say, "if everyone is unhappy about my decision, i know i've done my job". using that criteria i guess our government has done its job.
some say that this is the trillion dollar deal that breaks our country. it seems to me i've heard this lament before, during every previous trillion dollar deal.
so much BS, so little to show for it.
just send money.

179TH AND VYSE, BRONX, NY (PART XVIII): LIFE BEFORE DEATH IN NEW JERSEY

the most significant event that occurred after moving here was the sneak jap attack on pearl harbor. remember, the day that lives in infamy? of course you don't. you don't even remember 9/11/2001. what was that, you say? nevermind.
my dad, manager of the night shift came into the living room of our one bedroom apt. like cinderella, i slept in the living room but who holds a grudge? he and i listened to the radio media reports. we were just quiet and did not say much. my dad quietly went back to the bedroom. i think my mom was out, probably with her mom and sisters, or shopping, or at a dance. who knows? too late now to find out or discuss it.

NEW YORK CITY
we were in new york city this past weekend - NEW YORK CITY - YES, WE WERE IN NEW YORK CITY, while you were wallowing in new jersey at the officer's club getting stoned and flirting with the other creepy-crawley primates. we had a great time while you just got a headache or something penicillin can fix.
although 150 years old we accomplished our goals from saturday morning to sunday night. pretty good for an old geezer and his frau. seeing two shows, a movie, holiday decorated windows along fifth avenue, st. patrick's cathedral, dinner along restaurant row on 46th street, five star (or something) hotel room, and amtrak transportation coming (sat. morning) and going (sunday evening).
of course we were ripped off. how else can you do it? my ex-boss, lenny, was never ripped off. of course he's been dead for a dozen years but no one ever took advantage of him.
ok, i'm glad to get back to my inert and lackadaisical life style.
see you at the officer's club.

my ironman blogging streak is broken. i have published a blog every day since january 21, 2009. continuing this streak was so close. the wife and i returned from our excellent weekend adventure in NEW YORK CITY (DID I MENTION NEW YORK CITY) (yea!) last night at 11:57. aware of my potential breaking of my streak motivated me to dash .. ummm .. stroll to my computer and try to beat the clock. unfortunately, booting up and getting on to this site was not timely. so i went to bed and got my zzzzzs. so close, so sad.

MY BLOG: FOR ME AND MY GOLDFISH II
internet superhighway |
roaming the internet information superhighway, i find there is a wealth of misinformation concerning the pre wwii time in the bronx, ny. i've seen incorrect maps, incorrect names of places, and incorrect histories and a lot of back biting among people who want dominance. my discussion of this time is authentic. i guess i'm the last one alive who (sorta') remembers how it was and writes it down.
i suggest that other people of this age create a more public image and blog to write their history without comments or back biting.
nevermind, the people (and engineers) can just guess at events and stuff like they always do.

179TH AND VYSE, BRONX, NY (PART XVI): LIFE BEFORE DEATH IN NEW JERSEY

upscale living in this area included rowing on the bronx river above the waterfall. walking across the top of the fall was an interesting activity. below the fall you could catch tiny eels or other disgusting stuff. accidentally slipping into the water, getting soaking wet, and trying to sneak home past the neighborhood housewife watch brigade, encamped outside my building was challenging, actually impossible.

just before wwii we moved to another neighborhood way-way across the bronx, near bronx park (and its famous zoo). it was four el stops from the intervale station (simpson, freeman, 174th, and 177th). my dad was probably making $50 big bucks a week at this time and my mom wanted an upscale place to live. i don't know.
i have no idea why there was an exodus from the south bronx to this area but the klovers from rogers place were on vyse around the corner, the olsmans had moved to mohegan avenue and my grandparents at some time moved to vyse and 180th st.

i don't want to leave out morrison avenue where my baby sitting father let me ride down an incline on my tricycle and i found there was a step on the bottom and i flew off in one direction and the bike flew off in another (you're enjoying this, aren't you?). bike and all crash landed. thanks dad. who holds a grudge?
or when he took me to a sandlot baseball game a few blocks away and forgot about me. this stuff builds character. if it doesn't kill you it strengthens you. yeah, right!

BOISE STATE REDEEMS ITSELF
LA TIMES: "Nevada, Boise State finish with victories"
strong finishes for last week's adversaries. unfortunately neither team is of uber-football charisma or strength. virginia tech is going to the orange bowl and bsu kicked their butt and have a better record. life is not fair.
sorry, there is no football fairy. there is no free lunch in football. whatever!

PIRATE LATITUDES BY MICHAEL CRICHTON
just finished this book.
if you liked movies like, the black swan (1942 - tyrone power) or the sea hawk (1940 - errol flynn) you'll love this book. it has all the angles and facets of the theme of the "good pirate" (me) against the evil world (you).
this story seems to be destined to become a movie. it appears to be somewhere in the initial production cycle to be released in 2014.
capt. charles hunter, privateer and his crew is:
on a mission to take ill-gotten treasure from bad guys;
captured by bad guys;
escapes from bad guys;
climbs sheer cliffs;
hacks his way through tropical jungles;
blows up an impregnable fortress;
captures a treasure ship;
defeats a battleship of overwhelming power;
confronts cannibals;
overcomes an attack of deadly curare darts;
fights off an unstoppable, many tentacled sea monster;
survives a super powerful tropical hurricane;
captured by supposed good guys;
sentenced to death;
escapes from supposed good guys;
settles debts with the deceitful;
and more.
*************************************************************************************************************************
JUST SAYIN'
the year is 1665. if you strung a handful of lifetime lengths like mine end to end, extend them into the past you would arrive at a time when people exactly like you and me were alive during what seems to be a bizarrely primitive time. sorry, no ipads here.
i am strangely fascinated by the weird world of british expansion before 1700. it existed and our ancestors existed and i can assure you they were exactly like us. somehow in their total ignorance they survived long enough to procreate. yea! survival rates and life expectancy were virtually .. umm .. nil. but we're here. initially i thought this book would be more historical than fictional.
nevermind.

MORRISON AVENUE, BRONX, NY (PART XIII): LIFE BEFORE DEATH IN (UGH) NEW JERSEY
(continued)
after leland avenue and before kelly street was morrison avenue, sorta' near now defunct monroe high school.
my dad was night manager at a 24/7 eatery on westchester avenue.
among the big events in my toddler life was the day another kid fell on the outcropping of rocks on the lot across the street. she may have been hurt, stuck or something but it was the talk of the street among toddlers and their moms. and the day i saw, after her bath, a girl's private area. it was a shock. i thought she must have had a terrible accident or something. to this day i don't know what happened to her privates.

WIKILEAKS, WHATEVER.......
you cannot be surprised that governments are hypocritical exactly like or worse than you or your associates. in your heart you know that your mother wouldn't give you the right time unless there was no other choice. so, suck it up, the truth is revealed and you can't handle the truth. we must kill the messenger.
for me this is a breath of fresh air being tired of constant attempted manipulation via the various government propaganda machines.
can i sell you some stock? you know, we are running out, especially before xmas.

HOE AVENUE, BRONX, NY (PART XII): LIFE BEFORE DEATH IN NEW JERSEY
(continued)
the year before moving to 179th and vyse my mother had a tragedy. i ruined her life. she had bought tickets to hellzapoppin, a popular broadway show for dimwits with olsen and johnson a slapstick vaudeville type pair. my mom never forgave me for having an appendicitis attack, getting sick, and ruining her life.
i had an acute appendicitis attack the day before the day of my parents performance. after the removal of the offending part i came down with measles in the hospital and. (in those days) i was quarantined. from the fuss that was made you would think the black p;lague had attacked the hospital. they loved me there. but i lived and here i am.
i returned to school about six weeks later. my absence did not seem to affect my sluggish progression through life as i was promoted to the next grade on time.

THANK YOU GOD - THANKSGIVING WEEKEND ENDS TODAY
eating out twice and consuming huge amounts of unneccessary food and chemical additives have (i'm sure) shortened my remaining life. but i will persevere.
everyone can return to what they normally do and i can go back to my various usual activities. yea!
******************************************************************************************************************
FOOTBALL VIEWS
for three quarters on thanksgiving day i was rooting against the cowboys but after their gallant (whatever) recovery and comeback, i suddenly found myself rooting for them. unfortunately, the saints must have had a deal with hell to make a comeback.
although i favor the NEW YORK jets, who play in new (ugh) jersey, they have a miraculous or devilish 9 win and 2 defeat record. their last minute victories are more than amazing ... ummm ... suspicious. with five games to go, we will see if their wheels stay on.
being a giant fan, i'm overly optimistic that the giants barely hanging on to hope with a 6-4 record will win, win, WIN, WIN ............. if they lose i will deny any association with them or the nazi party.
******************************************************************************************************************
the gorgeous young lady in the excerpted, "our town", video the other day is Penelope Ann Miller, alive and well at the ripe old age of 46.
***************************************************************************************************************
sorry kids, you can't beat this music and singer, alice faye.
everyone can return to what they normally do and i can go back to my various usual activities. yea!

DEAL WITH DEVIL RUNS DRY
boise state? is that iowa?
yes i know its near indiana and kentucky, somewhwere. the potato state thing.
the good part is that there will be no more hand wringing and hair tearing by the experts. rest in peace, boise state.
****************************************************************************************************************
GO BUFFS.
***************************************************************************************************************
to cap off my somber mood. i want to suggest a federal budget cutting change to the congressional menu:
do nothing officer's wives should be restricted from wasting their time and my money on the post golf course or the bar at the officer's club. drinking, flirting, playing golf, and general bitchiness does not constitute patriotism. if they are so patriotic, then do something patriotic.

BOISE STATE - NEAR THE END OF THE LINE?
boise state, a two touchdown favorite against nevada tonite probably has to beat the spread to satisfy the football authorities.
my grand daughter living within walking distance of the school opted to go elsewhere. simple me, i would have selected the glamour and fame of boise state. i was so proud and uplifted in 1950 when my CCNY team won both the nit and ncaa basketball tourneys. although having nothing to do with their victories, my self esteem was enhanced forever. not only was CCNY superior in its academic work but we were superior physically also. let us just say supermen. get lost, ivy league. no george w bush's here.

HOE AVENUE, BRONX, NY (PART XI): LIFE BEFORE DEATH IN NEW JERSEY
(continued)
i was totally mesmerized when i saw my first theatrical play at ps 75. the colors, the lights, the performance, the total atmosphere. those strong feelings for the stage have worn down to a nub over the past 150 years.
sadly for me even, "our town" leaves me cool and certainly the thought of some musical extravaganza like cats can cause my brain to shrink and die. ok, occasionally i see a show that makes an impression. in my present residential area i recommend howard county communinty college performances. i don't think i've ever been disappointed by their professional productions.
careful selection of broadway or off-broadway shows can yield favorable memories although they may be a bit pricey for someone like me who paid $1,20 a ticket (or something) of his father's money in olden times.
(to be continued)
***************************************************************************************************************************
ok, maybe, ""our town", makes me just a bit emotional.

SARAH PALIN, UBER HAUSFRAU
sarah is starting to get annoying. alaska is not the center of the universe. new jersey women are stronger and crazier.
y'know all housewives in new jersey think they can be president. does this make this country great or what?
the wife of the richest businessman in my new jersey town who basically mows lawns and sells lawnmowers will be glad to tell you about how to run this country.
the new jersey housewives unity guild, gabfest club, and mah jong group are anxious to run the country.
sarah palin, please step aside for some real talent.
***********************************************************************************************************************
fortunately for north korea both me and douglas macarthur are out of commission. as suggested by imus this morning we can refurbish the enola gay to straighten out these psychotic morons.

HOE AVENUE, BRONX, NY (PART X): LIFE BEFORE DEATH IN NEW JERSEY
(continued)
one time while living on hoe avenue, my mom and i visited some poor relatives on long island. my dad, working regularly made us rich. it so happens that they were so poor they could not afford to live in the bronx. they bought an old house on a small piece of land in what is now downtown flushing, ny for about $25. my mom and i walked from the li rr station, a few blocks to their humble abode.
i suspect that if fortune did not change for them and they were not able to move back to nyc, they would be incredibly wealthy real estate owners in flushing, ny of the donald trump prototype. as it turned out the children of the family became professionals (doctor - lawyer - indian chief, whatever) anyway. and amazingly without social workers, special advisors or charter schools.
nevermind.

HOE AVENUE, BRONX, NY (PART IX): LIFE BEFORE DEATH IN NEW JERSEY
around the corner was a large (mmmmmmm..... ) pancake eatery close to or near where the, "subway" is now. further around the corner on southern blvd. was a bus depot which had buses going all over and out of the city. my granpa's stock broker was across the street in the building next to the spooner movie theater on southern blvd. a few doors down from the bus station was another movie theater. opposite the pancake house was, hunt's point square where my granpa and i played checkers.
spooner movie house |
two nyc subway system stations were and still are nearby. one at hunt's point square the other at simpson street and westchester avenue. trolly cars along southern blvd. and along westchester avenue.
eating places and retail stores lined southern blvd. food markets lined 165th street near simpson.
and ps 75 and a playground were a few blocks away. library nearby.
on about $40 a week or less you could live well, all this could be yours and your wife didn't have to work.
high schools were selective. CCNY was free.
no lawn mowing, no car problems, no new jersey nitwits to put up with. the great depression was not called GREAT for nuthin'.
