ARMY DAYS XXIV
i had no thought as to how i was to return to denver. i could go back the way i came via pickup military flights or pay my own way using public transport. oddly, i was put in touch with, stanley, who lived around the corner on vyse avenue. rich, stanley, i barely knew him. his father too had recently died. home on leave from lackland airforce base in san antonio, we hooked up to share driving his car west as far as st. louis where he let me out, hung a left, and headed to his base.
although little is written about the harry-truman-korean-bastard war period my neighborhood was emptied out by the armed forces. some guys actually got married and impregnated their wives to get out of the draft. this was not a good idea as far as i was concerned.
in st. louis near the RR station i stopped overnight at a flea-bag hotel and continued my journey to denver the next day by train.
